Katahdin Sheep

WE CURRENTLY ARE NOT RAISING ANY SHEEP, BUT WE DO STILL HAVE SOME REMAINING MEAT INVENTORY LEFT TO SELL.

There aren’t many things that we buy on an impulse but buying this flock of sheep was probably one of the fastest decisions that we have collectively ever made. We had been discussing about adding sheep to the farm for almost a year now. After talking with some friends who raise sheep we decided to take a ride one day, to a farm near by to see what these sheep were all about. Call it a gut feeling, intuition, or just a plain hunch but needless to say, a week later we were bringing home this flock of 49 ewes and a ram of Katahdin sheep.

So why Katahdin’s? I don’t think we could explain it any better than how the Katahdin Hair Sheep International describes them.

Katahdins are hardy, adaptable, low maintenance sheep that produce superior lamb crops and lean, meaty carcasses. They do not produce a fleece and therefore do not require shearing. They are medium sized and efficient, bred for utility and for production in a variety of management systems. Ewes have exceptional mothering ability and lamb easily; lambs are born vigorous and alert. The breed is ideal for pasture lambing and grass/forage-based management systems.
